By its very nature, the event industry is energy-intensive and produces waste. Despite this, solutions exist to enable those involved in this sector to limit waste emissions and offer events that are as environmentally friendly as possible.
Make yourself comfortable and take notes!
All you have to do is follow these 10 resolutions.
1. Eco-designing your event is essential
The first step to making your event as responsible as possible is eco-design.
What we mean by this is that, right from the conception of your event, you need to consider its entire cycle to minimize the environmental impact of the various players involved in its design.
In this way, all decisions taken will be thought through with sustainability in mind.
2. Choosing your service providers
Choosing your service providers is a crucial and decisive step.
They must be chosen with the utmost care since your choices of venue, caterer, technical service provider, etc. must be consistent with your expectations, but also with your commitment to sustainable development.
For example, choose a venue that respects the surrounding environment and does not distort it. When it comes to caterers, look for those who use local, raw, seasonal products, and who are committed to reducing or even eliminating waste.
As far as technical service providers are concerned, there's a PRESTADD label that rewards event companies for their commitment to sustainable development. This label is a way of quickly differentiating between committed service providers, making it easier for you to make your choice.
Last, but not least, it's a good idea to select suppliers located less than 100 km from the venue of your event.
3. Responsible event activities
The third resolution is to organize events around the theme of environmental protection.
These activities must of course be carried out responsibly, such as beach or forest clean-ups, hummingbird team building (team building on the theme of sustainable development), upcycling team building, or zero waste workshops during which your employees learn how to make natural products.
4. Upcycling
Upcycling is a resolution you should make right away!
By definition, the events industry is a sector in which each event is unique, requiring a personalized theme, tailor-made decoration, and, consequently, its scenography.
That's why upcycling is your best weapon for keeping to your commitments, while at the same time wowing your staff with different themes and worlds every time. Upcycling extends a product's life by transforming it and then reusing it.
This means using all existing resources to create different worlds with materials and products you already have.
5. Responsible goodies
As we've already discussed in another article on how to make your events greener, goodies are a vehicle for shared memories and solidarity between your employees.
At Mana, we want them to reflect your image and respect your commitments.
Among the many responsible goodies we can provide, we can, for example, equip you with personalized totes bags, ultra-compact isothermal water bottles, and bamboo lunch boxes... The possibilities are numerous and we will always find the perfect accessories to accompany your employees!
Similarly, to give a more fun tone, I'd put it this way: Clearly, choosing eco-designed goodies for your events is a great way to underline your commitment to the environment, but also to encourage your employees to do the same!
6. Reuse of materials
As event organizers, we all share a common enemy: waste!
Hardly avoidable, waste can nonetheless be mitigated: we give you our tips!
It's not always a good idea to personalize items such as signage, badges, and eco cups. Opt for neutral designs, which will enable you to reuse them more easily at future events.
7. Carbon footprint
Drawing up a carbon footprint for your events is a good way of highlighting your commitment to the environment. It can be a tedious task, but it highlights all the efforts you've put into designing your event.
For example, it allows you to measure the carbon footprint of your professional activities, and thus pinpoint activities that consume too much, enabling you to make the necessary changes to reduce the impact of your event as much as possible.
8. Responsible travel
The events business involves frequent travel, so the car is a must, but unfortunately, it's far from responsible.
Don't worry, there are plenty of solutions, such as carpooling for short trips, and using trains instead of planes or electric buses for longer journeys.
These changes will be beneficial for your company's image and for your employees.
9. ISO 20121 label, ERE 34
Labels are tools of distinction that reinforce your commitment to the causes you defend.
In the world of event organization, the ISO 20121 label is a way of distinguishing companies that act with respect for the environment and sustainable management of their events. This label is highly beneficial for your company's image.
ERE 34 is another distinction awarded to companies whose ambition is to enhance the value of their CSR initiatives. This distinction not only differentiates your company in the eyes of future employees but also reinforces your commitment.
10. Donate 1% of sales to a responsible cause
Finally, we suggest you do a good deed and donate 1% of your sales to a cause close to your heart. In addition to improving your karma, this gesture will reinforce your commitment to sustainable development and lend credibility to your message as a committed company.
At Mana Événements, for example, we donate 1% of our sales to environmentally friendly causes such as tree planting, and we're convinced that these resolutions should rapidly become the norm for all event industry players.
